How Are We Helping Houston Metro Children Read Before 3rd Grade—One Family at a Time

Building Home Libraries
Project B.O.L.D
Project B.O.L.D. (i.e., The ELLF Literacy Box, Oral Language Development, Literacy Development, and Developmentally Appropriate Practices) Project B.O.L.D is a home literacy program designed to address the oral language and literacy development needs of early childhood learners in the Houston Metro area. Families will receive an ELLF box with children reading books and literacy material which parents can use to help build oral language and literacy skills.
“Project B.O.L.D. gave us more than books—it gave us a way to learn together at home. My child gets excited every time we open the kit, and I feel more confident helping with reading.”
— Tanya M., Parent of a 4-year-old

Beads, Buttons and Books Family Workshops
We provide interactive workshops for families of PreK and Kindergarten children focused on building early reading skills at home. Parents learn practical strategies to support their child’s development in phonological awareness, letter knowledge, phonics, and listening comprehension, while also encouraging motivation to read.
Each session includes take-home books to help build the child’s home library, along with literacy materials that families can use to reinforce learning beyond the workshop
“These trainings gave me the tools and confidence to support my child’s reading at home. The difference I see in my child’s confidence and excitement about reading is amazing.”
— Monica R., Parent of a 5-year-old

New Teacher Grant
ELLF’s New Teacher Grant supports early-career educators by providing funding for classroom resources, literacy materials, and student-centered learning tools.
By supporting teachers at the start of their careers, we help create stronger classrooms, increase access to high-quality instruction, and positively impact the learning experiences of young children.
“Receiving the ELLF New Teacher Grant allowed me to create a classroom where my students have access to the materials they need to learn and grow. It made a difference not just for me, but for every child I teach.”
— Jasmine L., First-Year Teacher
